Ring Of Fire In The Sky

There will be an interesting celestial event in the sky this Sunday for people who are in its path. the event will start in  eastern Asia and extend to parts of the Midwest United States.

It has been almost two decades since the last “ring of fire” eclipse, or annular eclipse if you want to get technical, occurred in the continental united states and will be celebrated by over three dozen national parks will be having watch parties. Whatever you do, do not look directly at the eclipsed sun or you can get a serious eye injury. The event isn’t viewable for people on the east coast, but you can find websites such as the Slooh Space Camera, which plans to broadcast the event live.  It wont be until 2017 that we will see a total solar eclipse.

Japan Hopes For Tourists Return

Japan is hoping for tourists to return this year for the annual Sakura, cherry blossom, festival after last years devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the area less than two months before the festival was set to begin causing a major decrease in tourism due to safety concerns.

Festivals that normally draw hundreds of thousands, and in some places over a million people, saw visitor reductions of up to 80%, as fears of nuclear contamination from the Fukishima power plant kept tourists at bay.

Over the weekend  hundreds of workers were busy at the picturesque Hirosaki Castle Park, painting hundreds-year-old bridges and light posts along pathways, and setting up vendor tents.

Every prefecture in Tohoku hosts its own version of a cherry blossom festival, and each is anxiously hoping tourists will return this year. The sakura draw is short-lived, but the locals are optimistic that that its success will kick off a year of continued growth in tourism to this region of rivers, mountains and coastal areas that serve as the backdrop for seasonal festivals throughout the year.

Flying Solo While Traveling

I came across this article today in the Associated Press about how traveling solo is great for people who can’t find a travel companion, but still want to have an adventure. Instead of staying home go out on your own and have an adventure. Whether big or small, easy or difficult, you are in control of where you go and what you want to do.

There are both good and bad aspects to being solo, but this article gives some tips and tricks to both and how to stay safe. A great tip in this article is if you can’t do a nonstop flight to instead take extended layovers in other countries and explore at no additional cost while you are making your way to your destination.

They also recommend keeping your expectations to a minimum so your not disappointed and to just go with the flow.

Exploring alone not your style? Look into getting on an escorted tour where you will be exploring with a group of people and have a set itinerary. You may feel a lot safer and its a great way to meet and get to know new people.

What is going on up there?

More freak outs in the sky with this recent event of a pilot incoherently left the cockpit and started sprinting up and down the aisle while shouting stuff about September 11. It’s a little weird that this happened before with a flight attendant shouting incoherent stuff about September 11 over the pa system.

The co pilot was able to get another pilot, who was flying as a passenger, into the cockpit and locked the door. while the incoherent pilot was banging to try to get back in, an order came over the pa system to restrain the distraught pilot. The plane made an emergency landing in Texas.

Women Ditch Spas For Hunting And Fishing

In the associated press i learned that there is a three-day workshop called “Becoming an Outdoors-Woman.” This workshop actually started 20 years ago and has spread to 40 states and some of Canada as a way for women to enjoy doing outdoor activities like camping, fishing and boating. States actually tailor their workshops to outdoor activities common in their areas and teach whatever survival skills are needed in the region. For example, in Florida the program includes courses in boating, kayaking, whitetail deer, fishing, knot tying and outdoor photography. Organizers say the sessions are so popular they usually fill up just days after they are announced.

The program began in 1991 in Wisconsin after researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point studied why women were less likely than men to participate in some outdoor activities, said Lynne Hawk, an education specialist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and director of the Florida program.

Myanmar Open To Tourists

As one of Asia’s most untouched countries sheds its past as an isolated military dictatorship and taboo travel destination it is becoming a new global hotspot – topping tourism lists as the must-see place to visit in 2012.

The country is eager for the influx of visitors their only problem is that there are very few hotels available since western companies haven’t been able to expand in the country. Then there’s the problem and concern over how much the public should have access to since everything is so well preserved they don’t want it turning into Thailand.

Soon their hotel problem will change with new laws being drafted to make it easier and more tax friendly for business to come in and and set up their business there.

Travel agents offer these tips for those planning a trip: Bring heaps of cash because Myanmar is a cash-only economy. With rare exception, credit cards are not accepted. Leave iPhones and BlackBerrys at home because foreign mobile phones don’t work here. Be prepared for hot, sweaty sightseeing because taxis are decades-old jalopies without air conditioning.”

Dark Tourism, What Is It?

I was scrolling through my emails today when i came across a travel weekly article with the main article talking about something called dark tourism.  Personally i haven’t a clue what dark tourism is, so i turned to Wikipedia for a definition.

Wikipedia defines dark tourism as; Dark tourism (also black tourism or grief tourism) is tourism involving travel to sites associated with death and tragedy.

Some examples examples of dark tourism include: Ground zero in New York, Katrina’s destructive force in New Orleans, the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, the ruins of Pompeii,  and the Killing Fields in Cambodia along with numerous other sites. Other smaller sites categorized in this subject might include locations fought in the revolutionary war or civil war where people trying to learn about their heritage and ancestry might come to tour. It’s kind of a broad category delve into.

taking a direct quote from travel weekly they say, “witnessing places where horrific deaths have occurred has for many become an integral part of experiencing a destination.”

In the article they say the Concordia could be the next attraction, since it somewhat resembles the titanic and its 100th anniversary, but since they don’t know if it will stay there, so the popularity of the attraction is just speculation.

In the article they say that there is a lot of good that could come out of these kinds of tourist. “Keeping in mind the sensitivity this type of tourism requires, Prohaska and others in the travel industry believe that dark tourism can and should be executed respectfully, educationally and in a way that can benefit the victim communities.  Prohaska noted that disaster tourism also raises awareness and often leads directly to visitors wanting to be part of the solution, helping with cleanup and recovery efforts.”

Travel Advisories Made Easy!

To help with the confusion of whats safe and whats not travel weekly has put together a map highlighting the travel warnings, set out by the state department, in red to avoid confusion about whats safe and whats not.

“To help our readers better understand where dangers really exist in Mexico and to demonstrate that most parts of the country — including all destinations popular with U.S. tourists — remain safe, we have created a map that presents the warning visually. Each named location contains a number key that refers to exact language about that location in the State Department‘s warning.”
